Artist statement
Marcus Smaldone
I chose to draw and color a picture of a mountain range. I was influenced to draw this specifically because of Grandma Moses and Claude Monet. Both these artists shared a interest and talent in landscape. The detail on their work was incredible. Many different colors were put in to the final meticulous detail. I chose to make my drawing take place during sunset to really include to beauty and detail of the nature. The size of the mountains is larger and almost takes up the paper. I did this because I wanted to show how overwhelming nature could be. My picture really makes you appreciate the world we live in. One of my main elements of art was shape. I felt that shape would be one of the most important elements because I didn’t want my picture to look like a cartoon. I wanted to show jagged and intimidating couloirs. This drawing also takes place in the spring this is why the trees are starting to turn green yet there is still some snow on the top of the mountains. The next element I used was color. Different colors were used to blend the sunset as well as the mountains. The sky is blended with pink, purple, blue, and a darker orange. The mountains show a slight reflection of the sky with the blue and orange blended into the gray. Overall I am happy with my work but I do believe I could have put a little more work into the tree and grass area. Next time I would not line the trees up in a straight line so it doesn’t look like a perfect forest. The over critique I would give myself is make my river a little longer and wider just to keep things balanced and in proportion. Overall I am pleased with how this project went.
